"June 12th of 2008 I saw a v-shaped object in Chicago at Belmont Ave.

"I believe the object I saw ay January 5, 2009 is the same or similar object I saw in 2008. I was going to work at 4:50 a.m. and was east bound on I-90. I had just past the Cumberland exit when I looked up and saw something partially visible in the morning sky. There was a lot of clouds, but through an open patch I could see three traffic color green lights and one white light just hanging there. At first I just stared then I realized it wasn't moving. I would estimate the height at about 750 feet.

"I stared at it and wondered if I should pull off and snap a picture with my camera phone, but decided it was too dark and probably would not come out well. I continued to watch it and noticed there were divisions between the lights, something I believed was there in 2008. I could see what looked like light grey metal separating the lights, and a design that reminded me of mother of pearl coloring, shaped like frothy waves going up the metal divisions. They appeared to me to be three dimensional. I looked to the east and could see several planes flashing in the distance coming toward O'Hare Airport.

"I once again realized there was no flashing of these lights, they were not moving in any way, just hanging behind the clouds. I watched until I was too far east to see them any longer. This took place in Cook County."

When Baseball Meets the Weird

There are things in this universe human beings have yet to understand. Things that control the vertical, things that control the horizontal, and even the fly ball. When these unknowns overlap with the known world, strange things happen. The paranormal gets in your normal like chocolate in your peanut butter. Not even America’s Pastime is immune from these supposed incidents. What follows is a trio of true stories of when baseball met The Weird.

Key West. The Florida islands. The crème de la crème of the American tropics where they show you everything but Jimmy Buffet. A place where you can actually smell the humidity as you peel your clothes from your skin. A place where strange things can happen.

On August 6^th, 1974, The Class A Key West Conchs hosted the St. Petersburg Cardinals at Wickers Field, capacity 1,000. The Conchs, a farm team at the time for the Chicago Cubs, boasted the worst record in professional baseball at 32-79. There is something oddly fitting about that, but that is not from where the weirdness of the story is derived.

The first pitch was at twilight. Fog rolled in over the island and undulated in a strange ballet in the skies above the game. St. Petersburg left fielder Ernie Rosseau would later call the scene “eerie.” In the bottom of the first, Joe Wallis came up to hit for the Conchs. The wind gusted up to 20 mph, a factor that did not promise to aid the Conchs in their season record. Undaunted, Wallis took a few warm up swings and got into stance. He then waited for the pitch. He hit a high fly that drifted in a lazy arc towards Cardinals right fielder, John Crider.

And then the ball disappeared.

Crider shook his head and then ducked for cover. Thinking his teammate lost sight of the ball, Jimmy Williams ran from second base to assist. Center fielder Claudell Crockett beat him there. By the time Williams arrived, Crockett’s arms were up in the air asking as he asked, “Where the hell is it?”

“It just…faded into nothing,” Crider said.

The outfield fell into chaos. Every Cardinal ran this way and that in search of the ball. Bumps, thuds, and grunts of frustration sounded out in a chorus. Meanwhile, Wallis made a slow, tentative circle of the bases while pausing every few steps to look over his shoulder at the visiting team’s panic. With no ball produced, the umpire ruled it a home run.

Naturally, the Cardinals argued against this. As an appeal to the rules was made, the fans (what few there were) exited the stands to search for the ball. People scoured over the crushed gravel parking lot and the paltry oaks and palm trees that made up the landscaping. No ball was found. Bystanders who were in the lot at the time were asked if they heard a plunk, tree limbs rustling, the shatter of glass, or any telltale sign of a baseball coming to earth. Nobody heard a thing. John Crider spent the rest of the night in the dugout, just rocking back and forth.

“As I hear tell,” he said. “A ball ain’t supposed to do that.”

The umpires contended that the ball exited the airspace of the park. Witnesses from each team maintained that was impossible due to the baseball’s low speed and declining trajectory. A local sportswriter for The Key West Citizen theorized that the trade winds caught hold of it and sent it out to sea. Though hesitant to offer any real comment on the occurrence, meteorologists at The National Weather Service admitted that theory to be rather unlikely. So what explanation is left?

“It had to be a UFO,” said Cardinals player, Tito Landrum. “Players don’t just go after a ball where they think it’s going to land and nothing lands.”

Not a stretch for those who point out that Key West is somewhat tangential to The Bermuda Triangle, a place infamous for disappearances. Or failing that, perhaps ghosts. Key West is replete with tales of the dead crossing over to visit the living once more, such as “Robert the Haunted Doll:” a child’s doll in the East Martello Museum that is said to move about the building on its own…even when encased in Plexiglas. The Conchs’ owner, a Cuban exile, attributes the ball’s mid-air disappearance to the ectoplasmic presence of author and one time Key West resident, Ernest Hemingway.

“Papa has dat ball. His spirit is everywhere on this island. He took that one home.”

He must have been a Conchs fan. They won the game 7-4.

Great Falls, Montana. Home of The Electrics.

Though the club’s history is largely unremarkable, one date stands out: August 5^th, 1950. That was when Nick Mariana was general manager of the minor league farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

On the morning in question, Mariana arrived at Legion Field with his 19 year-old secretary, Virginia Raunig to “inspect the field” before a game later in the day. In the midst of doing this, a glint of light caught Nick’s eye. He looked to the sky and saw two silver discs flying over the ballpark at a high rate of speed. Each one seemed to be rotating as it flew.

Mariana ran to his car. From it he pulled a 16mm color movie camera that he kept for team training purposes. Brushing his thick hair from his forehead, Nick pointed the camera skyward and managed to shoot sixteen seconds of footage before the objects disappeared over the mountains.

A quick bit of history. In 1950, a sense of paranoia pervaded deep into America. To borrow a phrase from Tom Clancy, a Red Storm was rising in the East. Many civilian and military leaders considered nuclear attack from the Soviet Union to be inevitable. What is more, just three years prior a pilot named Kenneth Arnold sighted a series of unknown craft over Mt Ranier, Washington. He described their movements as “saucers skipping over water.” Hundreds of sightings like this followed by people across the nation. Thus, “flying saucer” hysteria was born. Hollywood was quick to capitalize on this with movies such as Earth vs. The Flying Saucers and War of the Worlds. Invasion from across the ocean and outer space no longer seemed so far-fetched. Within this context, it is understandable how the film shot by Nick Mariana, general manager of the Great Falls Electrics, would become a nationwide sensation.

Nick’s fifteen minutes of fame began with the local civic groups of Great Falls. He was first invited to show his home movie to the members of the Central Roundtable Athletic Club. Inevitably, the local papers picked up the story and the film made its way to national media outlets.

It was suggested that the film be turned over to the police for an investigation. Local authorities deferred the matter to experts at Malmstrom Air Force Base, conveniently located just outside of town. Nick agreed to lend them the film for further scrutiny. This act ended up leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of Mariana and other members of the community, for when the film was returned it was found that the first forty frames had been removed. It just so happened that those frames contained the clearest footage, footage that according to others who viewed the film detailed two spinning, metallic discs with black bands along their outer edges. The Air Force maintained it only removed one frame that was damaged during the analysis, an analysis that was deemed “inconclusive.”

Additionally, Mariana said that men in a black suits and black ties visited him. They told him in no uncertain terms that what he saw were reflections of two F-94 fighter jets. Mariana retorted that the discs were moving faster than any jet anyone he knew had ever seen. To that, one man supposedly got in Nick’s face and replied, “You really shouldn’t talk any more about what you THOUGHT you saw.” Nick’s blood turned to snow and the conversation ended.

Investigators of the UFO phenomenon were quick to pounce on the event. Dr. David Saunders, a psychologist who studied UFOs during the 50’s and 60’s, even tracked down Mariana’s secretary, Virginia Raunig for her account of the sighting and the days that followed. He especially pressed her on the matter of the missing footage purportedly in the hands of the Air Force. To this, Raunig was hesitant and coy.

“What you have to remember in all of this is…that Nick Mariana is a baseball manager,” she stated. “That means he’s a promoter.”

To this day, the “Mariana Film” or “the Baseball Film” as it is sometimes called, remains one of the best pieces of evidence for the existence of UFOs as it was shot long before the advent of PhotoShop, Final Cut, or any computer software that could easily fake such a movie today. Indeed given the technology on hand in 1950, it would have been extraordinarily difficult to fabricate what the footage shows: two objects in the sky flying faster than any aircraft at that time was capable of.

In the end, it all worked out for Montana. Great Falls is now home to two minor league baseball teams: The Electrics and The Voyagers. The symbol for The Voyagers is a flying saucer piloted by a little green man as it circles the Earth.

St. Petersburg, Florida is the home to the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel. Known since 1923 for its exquisite décor, mighty palm trees, ornamental archways, and regal octagonal tower, the Vinoy stands overlooking Tampa Bay, affording guests on the upper levels a panoramic view of the Gulf Coast. It is considered the architectural crown jewel of the Bay area, and its elegant Southern charm has attracted such rich and famous impresarios as Jimmy Stewart and Marilyn Monroe. Now, the Vinoy is the host hotel for any baseball team visiting the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Scott Williamson, 2003 relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, checked in with his team in mid-June of that year. On the night of their arrival, Williamson turned out the lights in his room to get a good night’s rest before the next day’s game. That was when he felt “a tingling sensation over my body, like I was being watched.” Following that uncanny surge in the nervous system, Scott then began to feel enormous pressure on his chest. It became more and more difficult for him to breathe in the clean smell of hotel room air. Fearful, he rolled over in bed. Then he saw him.

“I looked over and saw this guy in a coat from the ‘30s or ‘40s, standing by the curtains,” Williamson said.

The apparition disappeared before his eyes. Williamson then called his wife, an emergency room nurse, and asked what sort of malady could produce the combination of hallucinations and chest pains. No plausible condition could be determined.

Later, a friend of Williamson did a bit of research on the incident. Two things were found: One, chest pains and shortness of breath are sometimes reported by people who claimed to have been in the presence of ghosts. Two, the original owner of the hotel died there in a fire. His name was Benjamin Williamson. Cue spooky music. Indeed the original owner was of the aforementioned name, but no other investigator was ever able to verify any story of a fire.

Fire or no, the Reds checked out of the Vinoy, leaving the hotel to its next unsuspecting victims, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The very night after Williamson’s ordeal, many members of the Pirates staff reported sighting people in the hotel who were dressed out of place and even transparent. While pitching coordinator Frank Velasquez fought with the keycard entry to his room, he noticed a man walk down the hallway in an old fashioned suit with top hat and tails. Figuring he was the concierge, Velasquez turned to ask for assistance…just in time to see the man disappear through a wall. Other Pirates players and personnel reported seeing a similar figure that very night, some saying the man was standing in their rooms.

As one might guess, the reported happenings of these two nights in 2003 were not unique. In 1991 the Vinoy was undergoing renovation. One afternoon the entire work crew quit after finding their paint cans were opened, thrown from the scaffolding, and their contents splattered all over the walls. The workers were in an adjacent room taking a break…and never heard a thing. In 2001, John Frascatore was at batting practice with the Toronto Blue Jays. An assistant ran into the dugout and told John to immediately go to the clubhouse and call his wife at the Vinoy. Fearing any number of horrific medical and violent crime scenarios had befallen his wife and kids, John and his racing heart wasted no time getting to his cell phone.

His wife screamed in a shrill voice that their room was haunted and they were checking out that very instant. Won’t even bother packing. Apparently, the kids were brushing their teeth and the water refused to turn off. Once the faucet knob was strong-armed into place, it stopped. Then they would leave the bathroom and it would again turn on. And that’s when the toilet began to flush on its own. When John spoke to the Vinoy front desk about moving his family to a room in the hotel’s new wing, the staff member yawned and told him, “Yeah, that stuff happens all the time.”

Many other baseball players and support staff have had encounters with the unknown at the Vinoy, but perhaps none are quite as disturbing as the account of pitcher Jon Switzer of the Devil Rays and his wife Dana. Why a Devil Rays pitcher was staying at the visiting team’s hotel is unknown, but on with the story we go.

During the night, Jon and Dana heard a “scratching” behind the headboard of their bed, “like a rat clawing from the other side of the drywall.” In time the noise in the dark subsided and fifteen minutes of quiet passed. Then all hell broke loose.

The scratching returned and this time it was loud enough to shake the bed. The temperature of the room seemed to turn icy, as if the air conditioning was just cranked to “high.” Jon and Dana leaped up and turned on the lamp on their nightstand. What they saw then would disturb them for the rest of their lives.

Above the bed was a 19^th Century-era painting. It depicted a young girl in a Victorian dress holding a basket in a garden of flowers. According to Jon, the girl’s expression was one of desperation and her left arm was moving, actually moving and clawing at the glass of the frame as if wanting out. The Switzers left the room and decided to forego the next morning’s continental breakfast, even if it was complimentary.

As of this writing, the Tampa Bay Rays are on top of the American League East and are considered one of the best teams in baseball. Maybe it’s because their opponents can never get a decent night’s sleep.

Fatal Bicyling Accident Blamed on Aggressive Blackbird

An aggressive blackbird bird is being blamed for an unusual bicycle accident that led to the death of a 60-year-old man on a north suburban trail last week.

Lawrence Holtzman, 60, of 1727 McCraren Rd., Highland Park, was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m. on July 2 at Evanston Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiners’ office. A July 3 autopsy determined he died of craniocerebral injuries from a bicycle accident.

According to a Highland Park police spokesman, Holtzman was riding a bicycle on a trail behind 3040 Skokie Valley Rd. with his wife and daughter about 10:15 a.m. on June 19 when the crash occurred.

A red-winged blackbird "flew down in an aggressive posture" -- possibly protecting a nearby nest -- and Holtzman "took evasive action," either by swerving the bike or swinging his arm, according to the spokesman.

He said Holtzman then fell off the bike and struck his head, leg and arm on the ground. The "very strange" accident involved only the one bike, the spokesman said.

Holtzman fell unconscious and died at the hospital about two weeks later. No one else was hurt.

Highland Park police are investigating.

UK Helicopter Chases Flying Saucer

Continuing their open policy, the South Wales PD released information on June 20 that one of their Air Support Units reportedly had a near-collision with an unidentified aircraft on June 7.

The helicopter crew of three agreed it looked like a "flying saucer," and they pursued until low fuel forced a return to base.

One wonders if this UFO was DUI ...

It was at that point that the astonished surgeons noticed the man was beginning to breathe unaided again, his pupils were active, he was giving signs that he could feel pain -- and finally, his heart started beating again.

Several weeks later, the man can walk and talk.

Possibly directly related to this news that the Pope says it's okay to believe in aliens, Britain's Ministry of Defense has released reports regarding "unexplained aerial phenomena" (UAP) from some theoretically highly-credible sources, including air-traffic controllers.

Britain releases batch of files on UFO sightings

LONDON - The men were air traffic controllers. Experienced, calm professionals. Nobody was drinking. But they were so worried about losing their jobs that they demanded their names be kept off the official report.

No one, they knew, would believe their claim an unidentified flying object landed at the airport they were overseeing in the east of England, touched down briefly, then took off again at tremendous speed. Yet that's what they reported happened at 4 p.m. on April 19, 1984.

The incident is one of hundreds of reported sightings contained in more than 1,000 pages of formerly secret UFO documents being released Wednesday by Britain's National Archives. It is one of the few that was never explained.

The air traffic controllers' "Report of Unusual Aerial Phenomenon" was filed from an unspecified small airport near the eastern coast of England.

The men, each with more than eight years on the job, described how they were helping guide a small plane to a landing on runway 22 when they were distracted by a brightly lit object approaching a different runway without clearance.

"Everyone became aware that the object was unidentified," their report said. "SATCO (code name for a controller with 14 years experience) reports that the object came in 'at speed,' made a touch and go on runway 27, then departed at 'terrific speed' in a 'near vertical' climb."

The incident is one of the more credible in the newly public files because it was reported by air traffic controllers, said David Clarke, a UFO expert who worked with the National Archives on the document release.

"They were absolutely astonished," he said. "It was a bright, circular object, flashing different colors, and after it touched down it disappeared at fantastic speed. The report comes from very qualified people, and it's one of the few that remained unexplained."

But while there are some unexplained cases in the papers, there is no reported instance in which the Ministry of Defense found any evidence of alien activity or alien spacecraft, said Clarke, who nonetheless expects conspiracy theories about a UFO cover-up by the British defense establishment to persist.

"The Ministry of Defense doesn't have any evidence that our defenses were breached by alien craft," Clarke said. "They never found one, no bits of one. That's all we can say."

Clarke said the released documents, dealing with the late 1970s and early 1980s, are the first batch in a series that will be made public in the next few years.

The National Archives is releasing the files because of numerous freedom of information requests seeking information about the government's UFO reports. Officials said that names of many individuals had been blacked out to protect their privacy and that the entire files had been reviewed to make sure their release did not compromise national security.

Ministry of Defense officials indicate in the files that UFO reports were only investigated to make sure no enemy aircraft had illegally entered British airspace. This was crucial during the Cold War when Russian planes posed a threat.

Officials said they did not try to solve UFO riddles once an enemy attack had been ruled out.

The vast majority of UFO reports come from members of the public who see strange things in the sky and jump to the conclusion that a UFO is involved even though there are logical explanations for what they observe, experts said.

"The most common things are aircraft lights, bright stars and planets, satellites, meteors, airships and things like that," said Nick Pope, another UFO expert who helped the Ministry of Defense investigate the phenomenon.

That was the case when a number of people leaving a Tunbridge Wells pub one night reported seeing a strange craft "with red and green" lights, according to the released documents.

Asked by police where the object seemed to be traveling, the pub crawlers said it appeared to be heading for London's Gatwick Airport. It didn't take a scientist to figure out it was a commercial plane making a routine approach.
